0521 taking us back over fifteen years to re-surface Merlin‘s Gangsters track which features the Lil Rascals. Merlin was a Thamesmead based MC who built his reputation through jumping on stages at every given opportunity and more often than not battling anyone brave enough to stand against him.
His early roots began when he first partnered up with Brockley based MC by the name of Kenny D and was soon joined by New Cross based beatboxer and MC, Blade. Kenny left the group within a few months and literally went off the radar leaving Merlin and Blade to continue building on the brand that was TCR (Total Control Rappers).
After an almost two year partnership but no studio recordings as TCR, the duo disbanded and amicably went their separate ways. Merlin went on to sign to Rhythm King Records while Blade went on a path of discovery of himself.
Merlin went on to achieve chart success in 1989 and toured much of the world with his hit with the Beatmasters “Who’s In The House“. Merlin did release an album but not long after that it all went silent. We did hear that he was working behind the scenes on production for some of the upcoming Grime artists which also led to this track with Lil Rascals.
Hopefully one day we’ll be able to get Merlin in for a DocuChat and find out everything there is to know. Merlin is a bonafide legend in the UK Hip Hop scene and definitely one of the pioneers whose story should not go forgotten!
